Late Evening in Venezia

Padova to Venezia Next day Monday, August 25 we rejected the option to remain here at Padova and keep riding to Venezia on train every day.   We just drove remaining 30km to Venezia. Venezia is connected with mainland by a long plain bridge or connector.  Several such connectors are going parallel to each other for cars and trains. The parking that we found right on the bus terminal plaza cost us 24€ per day.  From travel guides I was expecting 18€.  We picked just the cameras and water and embarked on our conquest on Venezia. From all locations this one was the most exciting.  O boy, o boy!  Do I ever expect to…

09-01 07;29 Sun is just getting through the woods

Slow start.   Finally decided to break open my magnesium fire starter kit.  It was $12 at EMS, but it did not include the knife of metal strip to do the magnesium shavings.  I had to use my own knife.  I was struggling for about 40 minutes with the instructions, and dump kindling, and shavings again.  The sparks would fly, and fire would almost starts, but not really.  Finally, I had to go to plan number one:  dry paper and matches.  I have got my fire going, and then breakfast, and then completed taking down the camp.  I started walk back with a heavy (but light) backpack at 11:38. Around…

6:50AM - Rifugio Alimonta - 2580 m

Saturday, August 23 – Rifugio Alimonta (Gruppo di Brenta) Next day on Saturday, August 23 I opened my eyes at 6:40AM, and sun already appeared through the mountains. I climb down from my bunk and ventured outside to record this strange moon-like surface that we missed to photograph 4 year ago. After a very dull breakfast and final pay (72€ for food, shower and lodging for two) we started back out at 8AM. We saw a picture like this in our local library.   Now, we found the place.   Notice people on the other side of the ledge. First 4 hours we should be climbing up back to Vie Ferrate, going at…

Night in camp Cold Sun – elevation 942 m. 05:56 – record-early wake up. That is what usually happens – on the last morning in the wild you always wake up very early.  And yes, this morning I am looking forwards for a change of scenery. This was a very good camp.  Secluded, covered by the tree canopy, but bright both in the evening and in the morning.  Yesterday, sun was setting just over the edge of an invisible cliff, and now, a few hours later, sun raises again not a 90° to the right.  It will be a long day. This spot is far enough from the trail as not…

Last event yesterday links with the first event today.  Late last night I discovered that cheap charge wire for iPhone that I buy from China for $1 stopped working, and my phone have only 5% charge left.  Today, I found a twist of the wire and I was able to maintain it with a rubber band to allow the charging to resume.  Way cool!  And now, what should be my new policy toward cheap wires – always have a spare cheap wire to spare?   07:45 – Second morning in the woods – Seize the Day! 09:14 – Boiling water is a clean water 09:28 – Hot cereal with fruits and…

I slept very well on my tent platform in a hammock and woke up around 7 AM.   I folded all my things without ever leaving the platform.  I had plenty of filtered water from yesterday for drinking and cleaning.   08:26 I made more pictures on platform, but hammock was already folded at this point.  Believe me – it was a comfortable setting. Plan for today: Mahoosuc Notch plus reaching the highest elevation of the trip   08:31 – I congratulate Lira on her day number 10 at assisted fasting spa – Centre Val Santé – in Rawdon, Canada.  She is there for long 22 days from Saturday June 24 till…

2017/07/01 Saturday – Gift of shelter at the end

07:11 -wake up and plan the folding sequence of wet tarps.  I need to fold everything so that all dry stuff will remain dry and all wet covers will loose as much water and possible.   No breakfast, as usual.  Just stand up and go.   Map of the first 2 miles of the hike.  Everything will be still wet from the rain There is a cell signal, so weather forecast tells me that rain will come after 12 PM. I need to go down before I can climb up.  This is one of many climbs today.     07:41 – hammock tarp and extra tarp helped each other to keep…

08-30 09;45 Bears like to visit raspberry bushes

Always in progress . . .   Next morning started around 7 (I opened my eyes at 07:22).  Around 8:40 AM, I started my hike.  For that day, I planned to complete a circle – climb 4,832 Carter Dome mountain, descend on a Black Angel trail, and complete the circle using Wild River trail.  The last portion of the circle was familiar to me from my May 2014 trip through East Branch trail.  The circle runs about 13 miles, and I was planning to spend the whole day completing it. My breakfast was a mixture of boiling water, Grape Nuts (interesting these is a type of a hot cereal, and…
